TAKE THE TRAIN
In Northern Virginia, that advice may save a commuter from Fredericksburg to Washington, D.C. as much as one-half to an hour on the road.  Route 95 is a fast road, but it doesn't take much to slow it to a crawl and commuters sit in traffic for 15-30 minutes approaching the Washington Beltway. 

The VRE is an alternative to Route 95 in the east, through Stafford, Prince William and Fairfax Counties to Pentagon or Washington, D.C.  The VRE is also an alternative to Route 66 in the west, through Manassas, Vienna and in to D.C.
